This is my first post - thank you all for having such an informative place for confused mattress buyers like myself.

Here's the situation: My wife and I are replacing a 6-year-old full-size traditional plush Beautyrest, and we are looking for a suitable King size mattress. After having tested quite a few, it seems that we like hybrid firm mattresses the most - those with a lot of general support and a bit of cushion to sink into.

We are both pretty small, young, and healthy. I am 5'6,180lbs and I enjoy weightlifting so I am sometimes a bit sore from the gym, she is 5'5, 135lbs, and a bit action, so we don't need a tremendous amount of support or anything too fancy.

The biggest problem we are running into now is uncertainty. We are looking for something that will last and is also comfortable, but unfortunately, we don't have many options where we are from, so we are stuck with the options of buying local and perhaps running into issues of quality, or rolling the dice and buying online without trying something out.

So far, we have found two mattresses that fit our preferences, but we are concerned about the quality of material and durability - something that can last ~10 years. We like the feel of most hybrid firm mattresses we have tried, for example, the Telluride Luxury Firm Mattress from Denver Mattress and the Sealy Posturepedic Medina Firm Hybrid Mattress both felt good. But, again, we are hesitant to pull the trigger on them because of their lack of quality materials or concerns about durability.

Overall, we are looking for a firm (similar to the ones linked above) hybrid, minimal motion transfer, enough support for normal-sized people, a budget of around $2k, having some sink-in in the comfort layers but not too much, edge support, and decently responsive. Also, we are focused on durability and longevity - we want the most for our money, even if we have to stretch a bit.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

I am sort of in the same situation as you, on the hunt for a firm hybrid mattress. However most that I tried were not firm at all, medium-firm at best but they were all memory foam hybrids. I tried latex hybrids which offer i've learned offer much better firmness imo, along with durablity. I tried an avocado bed in person because it was close, I liked the latex hybrid but not there 'zoning'.

After stumbling upon this site I will be buying from one of the businesses on trusted members list, specifically Mattress makers because they are close to me (if i like the feel when i go in tomorrow). But also SleepEZ and Arizona premium mattress. Those 3 seem to all use quality materials, have the latex hybrids im after, and as a bonus i'm supporting small biz instead of the big mattress companies that seem shady.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I may also be interested in a Latex Hybrid Firm mattress because of the longevity of latex. Would this be a good option if I am looking for durability?

Latex foam is one of the most durable bedding materials there is but it’s expensive (relatively) and it can take a bit of work to really dial in something that works best for both you and your partner/spouse at the same time. Given your BMI I’d definitely suggest latex since higher weights/BMIs can cause less durable materials to break down (depressions/holes, loss of support, etc) much faster. Hybrid vs solid latex mattress is really a matter of preference but there is typically less ability to tailor the mattress to your needs with a hybrid bed. Also depending on the coils they don’t work well for heavier folks (230lbs and up). If you get a zippable mattress it does allow you to start out with a hybrid first then switch to full latex core later if need be. Something to think about anyway.

I think since we liked the feel of normal hybrids the most, it may be hard to dial in the feel of a latex hybrid, but the durability of the material is attractive when considering the longevity of the mattress. We are in the process of trying to narrow down many options before we contact a retailer to ask more questions.

We have narrowed down to 3 options:

1. Saatva Classic Mattress
2. Luma Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress
3. Sleep EZ Organic Latex Mattress

To follow up to my earlier comment, I went into mattress makers here in San Diego and loved the Soledad firm. Bought it on the spot, it should be here in a week now. We are 5'10 190 and 5'6 140 so sorta in a similar bmi range are you.

Lots of good things to say about these guys and you even get the option to swap out the latex layer for another firmness/thickness if the one you buy isn't just right (for free). 5% off + 2 free custom pillows was a nice perk too just by mentioning this site.

Good luck!
