I have a need to furnish a house and would like to buy a decent cheap mattress.

In the past, I had bought the DreamFoam Ultimate Dreams Latex mattress for around $600. Unfortunately I don't think they sell this mattress anymore.

My wife and I are both side sleepers, I'm about 140 lbs she's about 100 lbs.

The Ultimate Dreams Latex Mattress was a great value - but I can't seem to find a similar Latex + High Density foam mattress.

Hoping someone has an alternative cheap mattress that they would recommend?

This is for a 2nd home and we won't be sleeping there a lot of the time, so if there is a recommendation for something even. cheaper than $600, I think that would be OK too. I've read the Zinus Green Tea Cooling Swirl Memory Foam mattress is decent as well as the DreamFoam Hybrid and DreamFoam Essential mattresses.

Curious to get other's recommendations on a decent mattress around $500-600 or less for a King or Queen size? Thanks!

Hi ryanc

I have a need to furnish a house and would like to buy a decent cheap mattress.
In the past, I had bought the DreamFoam Ultimate Dreams Latex mattress for around $600. Unfortunately I don't think they sell this mattress anymore.
My wife and I are both side sleepers, I'm about 140 lbs she's about 100 lbs.
The Ultimate Dreams Latex Mattress was a great value - but I can't seem to find a similar Latex + High Density foam mattress.

DreamFoam is owned by Brooklyn Bedding; This is a discount line of mattresses sold exclusively on Amazon.com. While these are reasonably priced, the first think that raises a bit of concern is that like many big box mattress retailers, these are sold compressed in a box, which depending on where how and duration of time spent in warehouse, can cause premature wear and breakdown of the materials used. And since it’s an amazon offering, they will not have the level of personal service and guidance a smaller manufacturer may be able to offer, and without the more lenient exchange and return policies.

While the DreamFoam Elements Latex looks like a decent discount mattress, with a 10’ and 12” model with 3 inches of Talalay and 6” or 8” of encased coils, where the ultimate Dream previously had an 8” HD foam base. For your normal range BMIs, lower grade foams (for memory foam no lower than 4 lbs/cuft and if polyfoam is used, with at least 1.8 lbs/cuft density, just to ensure It meets the durability guidelines. The DF Essential has 6,8,10,12 and 14 inch options at under $200, which you would be hard pressed to find any bed for a lower price - however there are no details on the density or composition of the memory foams used. Same with the DF Arctic Dreams Hybrid at $600, and the Zinus Green Tea Mattress at $300, far less than you could find for any mattress that contains latex.

Thanks for providing some of your stats...yes they are useful when generally looking at what may meet your criteria; remember any mattress will be unique to you and your wife based on your stats (Height, BMI, sleeping position(s) and any underlying health issues), and your PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences)… you and your wife have very low BMIs so you likely do not need to worry about extra support, and have a lot more freedom of choice. Also remember that memory foam and gel foam tends to sleep ‘hot’ for some people, and lower grade memory foam can also prematurely wear and cause ‘divots’ or ruts that can cause discomfort and even alignment issues. The next step would be to decide what type of mattress you are looking for, keeping the Mattress Specifications You Need To Know and also the Mattress Durability Guidelines in mind: Latex? Hybrid Latex? Foam? Foam hybrid? You may want to try different types in any local mattress retailer to see how they feel for you both.

Hoping someone has an alternative cheap mattress that they would recommend?

While there are many inexpensive mattresses on the market, remember any deal that is 'too good' may be because they are cheaply made, mass produced mattresses. While as you say you will not be using the mattress often in your second home, you don’t necessarily need to sacrifice more money for quality. Many of the Trusted members of the site have similar offerings to the types you have described, like:

- BioSleep Concept has their Support Plus Pocketed Coil Mattress with high resilience foam and pocket coils at a bit over $600, and the Ramses 3 Soy Foam Mattress starting at under $400

- Magic Sleeper has a 12” Gel Memory Foam mattress with zero motion transfer, good for side sleeping, at a little over $600 for a queen size, and the Hybrid Plush

- Richmond Bedding has the Flexalloy Hybrid Gel with gel foam, transition foam and encased coil layer for a little more at $850

The benefit of our Trusted Members offerings is that they are fully transparent with their components and construction, offer generous exchange and warranty terms, and if you can provide them with info on your Stats, PPP and sleep history they can offer guidance to help you find the right mattress for you. With a little more research, you have a good number of options for your next great mattress!
