First, let me say Thank You for providing such a wonderful forum wherein people are able to get knowledgeable, comprehensive advice from experts who go out of their way to help others. Unfortunately, that is becoming a rarity these days; so I applaud the owners, managers, administrators, moderators, and all of the helpful members of The Mattress Underground.

I spent the past few months doing online research and in-store testing with my elderly Mother, in order to find a suitable mattress for her. I've read all of the helpful information on how to better choose a mattress, and what may be best for support and pressure relief. Nonetheless, I also understand that each person has unique perceptions, body types, and possibly health conditions, that may cause them to view comfort levels differently.

My Mother is 87 years old and has slept on a traditional innerspring mattress for most of her life. Unfortunately, she has been sleeping on the couch, as she finds that more comfortable than her old, sunken-in mattress, which I recently put out for the trash. I temporarily moved an innerspring mattress from another room into her room, but she complains that the tufting on it bothers her back. So, she went back to the couch again to sleep.

She is not fond of memory foam mattresses, but is open to the idea of a latex hybrid mattress. As such, we checked out every store within a 20 mile radius and nobody had any latex mattresses, let alone a latex hybrid. She tried some innerspring mattresses, but did not like the high tufting on them. Actually, the only thing that she did like about some of the memory foam mattresses that she tried was that they had a very low profile cover, with little, if any, tufting.

My Mother has been recovering from a compression fracture in her back, since May. She also has osteoporosis; so at times, she has pain in her hips as well. Given my Mother’s age and health conditions, she is unable to go on a search much farther. In fact, just getting in and out of the car is a project in itself and we cannot travel to too many places, as she tires easily. At this point, she is in tears and has now just given up, which puts me in tears.

Consequently, I have to just purchase a mattress that would be best for her as far as support and pressure relief, and go from there. As such, I am leaning towards an APM Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress, as they seem to be better quality than anything in the stores around here, given that they are a trusted member of this site. Additionally, perhaps I may have better success in getting it right with only having one latex layer to decide upon. Given my Mother’s back issues, I was thinking of either the #28 Medium or the #32 Firm for the top layer, but I am not sure which would be best given her small size.

My Mother is only 4’10" and about 90 pounds. She sleeps on her back and has a Twin Xl adjustable bed, which has a sturdy solid platform (no slats). Due to her height and health conditions, she is unable to climb into bed easily, so I removed the casters from her bed to lower it. Even with that, a 10-inch mattress would be the highest that she could go with, but I believe that the Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress meets that specification.

Finally, after all of my blabbering, what I am trying to say/ask is... Under the circumstances of her not being able to keep shopping around for a mattress, do you think that the Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress would be a good choice for her? If so, would you suggest the medium or firm layer?

Thank you again for all of your knowledge and help.

Hi MamaNeedsSleep,

Welcome to The Mattress Underground Forum! :)

Thank you for the kind words about our Mattress Forum! Glad you have found the information here practical and useful.

I spent the past few months doing online research and in-store testing with my elderly Mother, in order to find a suitable mattress for her…///… Given my Mother’s age and health conditions, she is unable to go on a search much farther. It’s heartwarming to see the thought and research you've done to select a good/quality bed for your elderly mother that would also meet her specific needs, age, and various health conditions. Good sleep and rest will greatly assist in her recovery. There are many interdependent variables to consider, and while you've collected many data points to help narrow things down I know it can take s some time to pin down enough mattress basics to apply them to a more complex situation like your mom's. I would not get disheartened as you're definitely doing your due diligence and from what I can see you are making good choices. .. if her “sleeping on the couch “ can, to any degree, alleviate her discomfort then a good quality bed of suitable build should do this as well.

Thank you for providing your mother’s personal stats, likes, dislikes, preferences, and history with previous beds. it makes it much easier for us to lend a helpful hand. With her osteoporosis condition and other complications, it is very important that she gets some good and uninterrupted sleep. Between 5 and 7 hours of sleep, each night is proven to play an important role in bone restoration and health (especially for elderly women). You’ve probably seen many articles stating this such as EverydayHealth

As she can't test a mattress in person then, with her history and the data you collected the next best thing is indeed a reliable source of guidance from a manufacturer or retailer that has real MI experience and that has your interests at heart.

Consequently, I have to just purchase a mattress that would be best for her as far as support and pressure relief, and go from there. As such, I am leaning towards an APM Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress, as they seem to be better quality than anything in the stores around here,

In your mom’s case, one of the most important issues is that mattress is supportive and keeps her spine in neutral alignment. You are correct that as a back sleeper she certainly needs a firmer sleeping surface. It’s also good that at her BMI she is opting for a thinner mattress (anything between 7 and 10”) especially if going in and out of the bed is difficult for her.
It’s a little bit of a tossup here between the #28 and #32 Talalay because it really depends on her body type and where she carries her weight. This said you are definitely on the right track… her mattress should not be so firm that the recessed areas of her body do not get enough secondary support (coming from the uppermost comfort layer) The best mattress for her would need to support her spine at all points so as to prevent its “collapse” under the body weight thus putting joins and vertebrae under stress and creating pressure points on the more “bony parts”. Muscles will typically tense or stretch to compensate for any minor or major misalignments from the natural spinal curve. They will adjust and readjust in an attempt to find some comfort and allow the body to get restorative nightly rest. While pressure points are never relieved down to "zero" ... a mattress should be within the tolerance of the individual both in terms of their perception and comfort and in terms of any restriction of the capillaries and blood flow in the areas of the "bony prominences". This is a pdf about buying a mattress for people with osteoporosis that you may want to peruse.

Under the circumstances of her not being able to keep shopping around for a mattress, do you think that the Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress would be a good choice for her? If so, would you suggest the medium or firm layer?

APM’s mattress Eco Sleep Talalay Latex-Pocket Coil ~ see product description is a good choice that has a very good chance to work for your mom. You still have a few possible choices for a Twin XL size as the mattress comes either comes with a
6” Caliber Edge (pre-compressed lower diameter edge coils) surrounding Bolsa coils. 420 total coils at 13.75-gauge.... or ...
8” version of the above that has 434 total coils at the same 13.75-gauge.
Aside from being good quality/value and durable, the 13,75-gauge coils are firmer/stiffer than typical 15-gauge coils of the same diameter and height. This is a good combination of firmer coil support with the 3” thick Talalay comfort layer suitable for an elderly person with osteoporosis and compression fracture who finds it difficult to get in and out of the bed.
The 6” version would give you more room to play with more foams if need be, but as far as I remember from my last conversation with Ken, the 8” version has more coils 434 vs 420 and is firmer than the 6” version that has fewer coils (less diameter) In terms of firmness selection suitable for your mother, keep in mind that while you can ‘soften up’ a too-firm mattress, it’s very difficult to firm up a too-soft mattress. You might want to err on the side of caution on this.

Especially when choosing something online, it’s important to deal with experienced, educated, and helpful manufacturers who have the knowledge to guide you through the process and find something that they honestly think will fit sleepers’ specific sleeping positions, somatotype, BMI, and individual needs. A more detailed phone conversation with Ken may prove very enlightening and he can definitely "talk you through" the specifics of their mattresses and the properties and "feel" of the materials used and also make some contingency planning if things don’t go as well as you have hoped with selecting the correct firmness level for the Talalay layer...

I will say that Arizona Premium Mattress , besides being a long-time Trusted Member of the site, Are fantastic at matching mattresses to consumers. The APM Eco Sleep Hybrid is a great choice; Ken will be able to take the information on your mom’s Stats and PPP along with her mattress history and be able to recommend which firmness level might be best for her.

APM has a good exchange and returns policies (you pay just the shipping), in case you need to ‘fine tune’ a layer. I think you have found a good contender for Mom’s new mattress! Please let us know how the process goes for you and how she feels about it once she has had some time with it.
I wish your mother improved health and more comfortable sleep going forward,

Hi Phoenix,

Thank you for your very thoughtful input/guidance, as well as your kind words and well-wishes for my Mother. You possess such a wonderful wealth of knowledge! I truly appreciate you sharing it with those of us who are less knowledgeable about this subject. Thank you as well for providing me with links to those helpful articles.

Per your suggestion, I spoke with Ken from Arizona Premium Mattress, via a phone conversation, on November 21st. He confirmed that the Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress with the #28 Medium top layer would likely be a good choice for my Mother. As you suggested, Ken also stated that the top layer could be exchanged for a different firmness, if need be. Hence, I ordered a mattress for my Mother that same day.

I will update this thread once it arrives and my Mother has had adequate time to adjust to it. To date, I have not received a shipping notice/date yet, but it has only been about 10 days since I placed my order. I figure that it will likely be at least another week or two, especially given the holiday rush that most stores are experiencing.

I have to admit, though, that I was surprised my credit card was already charged and that I just received my credit card bill, which included the mattress purchase. It seems a bit premature to me, as most places do not fully charge your credit card until your item(s) ship, or at least until a projected shipment date is provided.

I always pay-off my entire credit card bill as soon as I receive it to avoid any costly financing fees. As such, it makes me a bit uncomfortable paying for something in-full that I have still not received, nor even been provided with a projected shipping date.

In any case, I am trying not to be too concerned, given that you, and others on this forum, find APM a trusted member ... and I value/trust your opinion. Again, thank you for all of your help! I look forward to updating this post with good news.

Have a healthy, happy, and blessed holiday season!

HI, MamaNeedsSleep,,

Thank you for your very thoughtful input/guidance, as well as your kind words and well-wishes for my Mother. You possess such a wonderful wealth of knowledge! I truly appreciate you sharing it with those of us who are less knowledgeable about this subject. Thank you as well for providing me with links to those helpful articles.

Chiming in here to address your questions, as Phoenix has a full plate in moving the website to a new host tomorrow. Thank you for your kind words, and I’m glad you found the articles linked helpful. Finding a new mattress can be a fraught process, especially when you are choosing for another person who has specific needs for comfort and support… I think you have made a good choice.

I spoke with Ken from Arizona Premium Mattress, via a phone conversation, on November 21st.

In any case, I am trying not to be too concerned, given that you, and others on this forum, find APM a trusted member

While I do not want to speak for Ken, as you say he is a very trusted member of the site and has been for many years. I’m sorry if the payment process is causing concern…I will say that Arizona Premium Mattress is a smaller hands on manufacturer with a small tight knit group of craftsman. Being ‘hands on’, Ken must wear multiple hats - and as you say we are heading into the holiday season. It may have slipped your notice, but when you place an item in the cart, the site gives you a notice of what the estimated availability is:

And then also in your cart before you click ‘submit’:

As well, APM is a smaller custom manufacturer; I would say they charge in order to start the process of custom building your ordered product, as they do not have the freedom to have products ordered which are then not paid for, as some huge amazon affiliated manufacturers can. I’m sure they will let you know when it is shipped, or you can also contact him on their Dedicated Forum page if you have additional questions.

I wish you and your mother the best for the holidays, please do let us know how she likes the new mattress after spending some time with it!

~ Basilio

*EDIT*
Sorry, MamaNeedsSleep, I see your followup post - Great News! I'm glad it will arrive soon so your mom can stop sleeping on the couch!
