Sleep Number p6 pillow top replacement? 27 Apr 2022 11:20 #1

Hello all,

I found this forum after doing some googling on how to replace a sleep number pillow top. I think I found a fix for my problem, but before I do anything it seemed like a good idea to ask here for more advice.

We have a queen-size p6 Sleep Number bed that we bought in 2014-15, and have been very happy with it. My wife sleeps in a separate room due to her snoring issues, however, so I'm the primary user of the bed. I'm 5'10" and 290 lbs., and recently I've noticed I have trouble falling asleep because my hips and ankles were sore from pressure. I replaced the inner foam layer with a Lucid 3" memory foam topper, and while it helped a bit, it hasn't really solved the problem.

A few weeks ago I had the aha moment of sleeping on the other half of the bed, since it's been largely unused, and WOW, did that make a difference! All of the aches and pains cleared up after one night. So, after some research I found out you should be able to shake out the pillow top to 'redistribute' the cushioning. I did that and it worked for about 3 weeks, but I'm right back where I was before.

Given how well I sleep on the unused side, it's clear now where the problem lies. I found this source for what looks like a reasonable replacement (www.magicsleepermattress.com/sleep-number-pillow-top-shell.html) but I'm wondering if anyone can share their experience with this or any other source for replacement. Or is there some other fix I'm not aware of? It looks like my warranty doesn't cover the pillow top.

I really don't want to buy a whole new mattress, since the remaining components are in good shape as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks,
Scott K.

Have you contacted Sleep Number directly about buying an OEM replacement? I know they will sell parts if you bought the bed from them but they may have limited stock on older products.

Here's a few other options:

airbedrepair.com/products/mattress-cover-for-sleep-number-beds?

www.cozyandcustom.com/product-page/euro-top-complete-outer-shell-fits-sleep-number-3000-beds-and-more

No need to buy a new mattress, these SN beds are very easy to rebuild with lots of aftermarket options available.

Thanks for the fast reply! I did look at both of those sites, and eventually went with Cozy and Custom. I didn't contact SN, mainly because after looking into the Cozy And Custom a bit more, it sounds like it's actually an upgrade to what I had on the p6, and it was a reasonable price.

I was a bit wary of attempting a rebuild but it's good to know it's a common thing to do.

It's been a week now since my replacement mattress cover arrived, so I've had time to try it out before following up.

In short, the Cozy And Custom replacement cover is EXCELLENT, and is the best $400 I've spent in some time. It fits perfectly around the four foam side bars and the two air bladders. The first thing I noticed was that the sidewall material is of much higher quality than the original p6 material -- it doesn't stretch like the p6 cover did, so all of the insides stay put when the top is zipped onto it. And this fixes my biggest complaint about the SN mattress in that it always looked sloppy on the bed frame. Anytime you tried to sit on the edge to put on socks or pants the sides would bulge out again, and once month or so I had to unzip and push it all into place again.

The pillow top is also nice and soft, but not mushy. I find I can use a higher setting now before it starts to feel too firm and my hips feel the pressure. It too is of a higher quality than the p6 topper, but that could just be from the fact that it's worn out.

All in all I would recommend looking at the Cozy And Custom replacement cover if you're thinking about tossing your SN bed. It fixed all of the complaints I've had with the original cover, and feels softer and firmer all at the same time, so it's definitely an upgrade.

Now I have to figure out what to do with the original SN mattress. It seems a shame to toss it, but it has a big stain in it and I doubt there is a machine big enough to clean it.
