Esge support: pure latex as good as latex hybrid? 09 Feb 2022 15:04 #1

Hello folks. I have what I hope is a simple question: on average, would you expect a 100% latex mattress to have edge support that is as good as, better, or worse compared to a hybrid latex mattress that has pocket coils (with stronger coils on the edges) as the support layer?

Thanks!

Hi pointed stick,
Welcome to our Mattress Forum!:)

would you expect a 100% latex mattress to have edge support that is as good as, better, or worse compared to a hybrid latex mattress that has pocket coils (with stronger coils on the edges) as the support layer?

Like with everything else it depends on the firmness level of the support core, the thickness, and the firmness of the layers above the coils or latex core. A true comparison between the two would need a sort of conversion between them as all layers work together in a complete mattress.

Generally, Pocket coils with “Stronger coils” around the perimeter will create better edge support than a solid slab of latex or foam encasement This said I have a blended Dunlop firm core that has better edge support than a pocket spring unit with no layers on top.

As latex is so durable and also point elastic (conforms to the shape of the weight on top of it without having a significant effect on the area beside it) and because of its high compression modulus (the rate at which a material gets firmer with deeper compression) ... for most people it doesn't normally require edge reinforcement for sleeping even for heavy people as long as the support layers are firm enough and the comfort layers aren't too thick and/or soft for the person sleeping on the mattress.

Latex mattresses generally don't have (or need) edge support for sleeping but there is an "edge effect" with foam materials because if the edges are compressed they are only being "held back" by the material on one side of where you are sitting (behind you) and not the other and because of it's "point elasticity" each part of the mattress can compress more independently from other areas. This means that with the more concentrated weight of sitting in combination with sitting on the edge you will tend to sink in more deeply and feel much more of what is underneath the mattress than you would if you are lying down on the mattress, particularly if you sit close to the edges. This would be more noticeable with softer or thinner layers than it would with thicker or firmer layers which would isolate you more from the support system under the mattress but even a firmer latex mattress can feel softer and you will sink in more deeply if you sit right on the edge of it.
