Desperate Hot Sleeper: Which is Cooler? Wood slates vs old coil box spring? 24 Jan 2022 11:05 #1

Hi,
Im a desperate hot sleeper trying to find a way to not be as hot during the night.
I have the "Silk & Snow" organic bed + i'm thinking of buying their 100% acacia wood slats bed frame here .

My question is: Would such a wood slats bed frame noticeaby help a bit making me cooler at night
VS a traditional coil-based boxspring? or no difference at all? It seems like a box spring (which im currently using)
must be decent at ventilation/heat dissipation... but i'm hoping that wood slats bedframe can do noticeably better....can it?

thaanks so so much you have no idea!
Oli

Desperate Hot Sleeper: Which is Cooler? Wood slates vs old coil box spring? 25 Jan 2022 11:13 #2

I do not have any experience with that specific bed but I would imagine wood slats (with literal physical openings between them) would have more airflow than a boxspring. Not sure how much of a difference in heat that will make though.

I live in a hot area and I found linen sheets to be awesome for the heat - they pass a lot of airflow and also feel cool to the touch even when its hot and they are dry. If it is really hot I also sleep with a 20" box fan blowing over me.

Quality and price varies a lot with linen - for a budget option I found the best ones to be the Target in house brand that is approximately a 50% linen / 50% cotton sheet and WAY cheaper than anything else.
3 Layer Dunlop Latex Foam Mattress
Thin zippered cotton "case" around foam
Thick zippered cotton pillow top case around everything (thick walls, very lofty top)

thanks Chris for having taken the time.
I just bought some high quality bamboo sheets.
The big issue i have is the heat thats being generated by my body and accumulated in the mattress under me.

I believe that mattress has a memory foam comfort layer and if so that would likely be the largest determining factor in heat dissipation at night. You may be better off even just adding a 2" comfort layer of latex on top to help break the thermal contact with the layers below. Other options like active cooling pads (air / water) can also help significantly lower the contact temp and increase comfort at night.
