Hi,

I've a problem, and I'm looking for help. Three years ago, I purchased a memory foam mattress (here is a description from manufacturer site: www.mollyflex.it/upload/blocchi/X724allegato1-1X_polionda-waterlily.pdf). Sleeping on it makes my lower back hurt. Basically, it is too soft for me. I've a dysocpathy and my lower back is more sensitive. On the other hand, it is perfect for my wife. I tried to sell it, but no one wants to buy it. Also, I experimented with ways to make it firmer - nothing worked. So, I came up with a potential solution - to cut it in half. My wife'd have two perfect mattresses for her, and I'd buy a firm one for me. I'd researched this topic and believe that the best tool to use is an electric knife. I'm quite good in manual works, so I believe that I'd be able to make a fairly straight line.

The only worry I have is how much damage I'll cause to the mattress with cutting (assuming that it will be a good cut for a manual one). As usual, there is a lot of mixed information on the web. Some people state that it should be OK. On the other hand, manufacturers claim that such a procedure would damage pressure points and destroy the mattress. I am inclined to the opinion expressed by people, but I wanted to ask experts about this. That is a reason why I created this post.

Thank you in advance for your help.

That mattress is around 7.5” thick so it shouldn’t be too hard to cut manually with an electric knife. I would mark the top and bottom with a centerline before cutting so your cut remains straight and perpendicular. I would also suggest using two people, one to cut and the other to gently open the two halves so the knife doesn’t get stuck while cutting.
