Edge support on the organic mattress from Sleep EZ 29 Sep 2021 13:21 #1

I am seriously considering purchasing a split king size organic mattress from Sleep EZ. However, I have one major concern and that is the edge support. I sleep near the edge of the bed and to not want the feeling that I am about to roll off the side. Is there anyone out there that can tell me if may concern is well founded or not?

Hi Don603.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum! :)

You did not specify the thickness you are aiming for your Sleep EZ Organic Mattress but generally because latex is so durable and also point elastic (conforms to the shape of the weight on top of it without having a significant effect on the area beside it) and because of its high compression modulus (the rate at which a material gets firmer with deeper compression) ... for most people it doesn't normally require edge reinforcement for sleeping even for heavy people.

This is particularly true if the support layers are firm enough for the person sleeping on the mattress.
Because of its point elasticity though ... those who sit on the very outside edge a lot (instead of sitting with your body weight more into the middle of the mattress) or who sleep with more concentrated weight on the outside few inches of their mattress may find themselves sinking down more than they like even though this isn't normally an issue when sleeping a few inches in the mattress.

I am not sure how “near the edge of the bed” you are sleeping but in most cases... a latex support layer that is firm enough relative to body weight of the person sleeping on the mattress will be not create roll off the side issues for most people.

For those who prefer a firmer edge then there is the option of a latex mattresses that use what's called a "racetrack" perimeter where the outer few inches of the latex support core is surrounded with a firmer latex. You can ask SleepEZ if they are willing to customize this for you. Just keep in mind that this would be above and beyond the call of duty and any trials, refunds, exchanges for customization might not be available once you ask for any customization.

Thank you, Phoenix

Sorry, for not giving enough details in my question. Never the less, your explanation has gone a long way in easing my fears. Especially sence I would be using the recommended 3” medium firm ( Talalay ) comfort layer atop a 3” medium & 3” firm ( Dunlop ) layers..

What are your thoughts on all the video reviews out there that seem to emphasize edge support.? Your your opinion of them in general.

Hi Don603

Generally speaking. it depends on who made the videos and if they base their assessments on factual data, but I would certainly take with a grain of salt any marketing videos that “emphasize” an aspect or another for any specific mattress. In other words, I would look at factual information and not marketing stories that are often designed to push some emotional triggers in the “target” audience.

The goal of any mattress is to make sure that no matter how the mattress is designed or how it feels ... that it uses high-quality materials that will stay the way it felt in a showroom (including any method used to make the edges firmer) for much longer than lower-quality materials and designs. This is why it's important to only deal with people who have the knowledge and experience to be able to tell you layer by layer exactly what is in any mattress you are considering and tell you the difference between the quality of the materials in different mattresses.
