Looking for 1st bed for my toddler - non-toxic, healthy, and reasonably-priced 21 Jul 2021 06:59 #1

Good morning,

I have spent several hours looking through your forums and website and am hoping that this may be a relatively simple question to address. After researching the best furniture, bedding, etc. for my son's first big boy bedroom, I am getting a bit tired - and feeling overwhelmed at needing to again find the most suitable for us mattress. His bed will be a single/twin with slats. I am looking for something that is our healthiest option (if possible) - I believe that may be an organic/natural latex bed with GOTS and GOLS certification. Now I begin to get confused... I have researched Naturelle (and was okay with it until your long discussion board posts about it), Dormio, Silk and Snow, and some others (that were far more money). He is just two so sleeps in any direction/position but will be a big kid (likely very tall and with that, heavy). I prefer firm mattresses myself and will likely be laying in bed with him reading, so would ideally want something more firm (for me). I know almost too much about greenwashing, etc. and am concerned that I may fall into some trap of best intentions but poorly-researched... what might be my top three mattresses to consider given these parameters? Was there a consensus about Naturelle? One consideration is that I will either need a mattress protector (as close to waterproof as possible) or a mattress with a cover that is as washable as possible as he'll soon be potty training...

Any help you might provide would be greatly appreciated - I really wish at times I could just buy anything and be unaware... this feels like a lot of responsibility...!

Hello Amanda,

It does seem like healthy should be a relatively easy category to access but you're going to need to define it further. Does healthy mean
  • organic?
  • flame retardant free?
  • vegan?
  • all natural - no synthetics?
  • certified - cradle to cradle or GOLS/GOTS or simply Greenguard or Eco Institut?

There are many options. Do you know your budget? That might steer you toward a DIY route or not.

Good afternoon,

I am looking for a non-toxic mattress - organic appears to often be a bit of a misnomer in the mattress industry so yes, that, if possible, but not necessary. Flame retardant free, ideally all natural, and the more legitimate certifications for the proper components, the better. My budget is as reasonable as possible, while still being the most healthy, I can. My budget is no more than 1000 or so... especially if I need a cover/mattress protector on top of that.

Thanks,
~ Amanda

I am also located in Ontario, Canada (90 minutes north of Toronto) and would ideally need to factor in shipping and/or pick up into the final costs... looking forward to hearing suggestions!
