TOPIC:

IKEA options for guest mattress that wil be stored on its side? [Canada] 09 Jul 2021 11:50 #1

I have an IKEA store credit, and am trying to decide between the following options for a guest mattress:

$129 Spring www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/husvika-spring-mattress-firm-30318865/
$179 Spring www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/hasvag-spring-mattress-medium-firm-beige-20307283/
$199 Spring www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/haugesund-spring-mattress-firm-dark-beige-00307302/
$199 Foam www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/morgedal-foam-mattress-firm-dark-gray-90277391/
$299 Memory Foam www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/matrand-memory-foam-mattress-firm-white-20272405/

The thing is that we don't have the space to store the mattress flat. So we will be storing it on its side flat against the wall, and try to rotate it every few months.

Just looking for advice on which of those options would be best for our situation. Thanks.

Hey eubrick3,

Welcome to The Mattress Underground :) !

You are comparing 2 innerspring mattresses, a pocket coil mattress, and 2 foam mattresses. Could you explain a bit more what situation you are planning for? Are you asking which model would best withstand storage on its side? How often will your guest room be used? Will it be used on a frame at some point or simply used on the floor as needed? Looking forward to your reply and thanks ;) .

IKEA options for guest mattress that wil be stored on its side? [Canada] 10 Jul 2021 14:21 #3

Hey, thanks for the reply.

The mattress will most likely be used on the floor and around 3-4 times a year, probably 1-2 weeks at a time. The rest of the year I would prefer to store it on its side. So yea, I guess the most important question is which would best withstand storage on its side.

Hey eubrick3,

Thanks for your response :) .

The simple answer is that none of these mattresses should be necessarily any better or any worse for your proposed storage needs. These Ikea mattresses of twin size and of lighter weights (ranging from 28-41 lbs.) should be able to withstand longer-term storage on their sides. The more simple the mattress construction, the fewer side storage concerns you should have. In this guest room case, perhaps one of the more basic foam mattresses would better serve your needs.

The other consideration would be the environment that the mattress is being side-stored in. From a climate control standpoint, any humidity issues should be addressed; but again, if you are checking on it and rotating it periodically, everything should be fine. I did notice that out of the 5 Ikea models that you're considering, all but the first one/ Husvika, recommend the use of a slatted bed base or mattress base. The warranty also states that if the mattress is turnable, it should be turned every 3 months or so "to help prolong comfort". Hope this helps to get you started, and let us know which way you choose to go ;) .

Thanks,
