Hi everyone, first post!

I've been researching beds and have a few questions.

Details:
5'7" 140lb side sleeper
5'3" 150lb side sleeper (and sometimes back)
King sized bed

1. I'm looking at the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Soft, Layla (soft side), or other since they rate around 4 in firmness. I need something between 2-4 firmness, correct?
2. I was looking at $1000 budget for King size. How much of a difference is there between a $1000 king vs. $2000 and $3000 king? What do I get for spending more?

Thanks, all!

Hey Grayson73,

Welcome to the Mattress Underground :) ! Thanks for your question.

Congrats on your new mattress shopping journey :) ! Thanks for including both of yours personal stats , budget, and planned purchase mattress size; sounds as if you've been doing some TMU prep work for your research, good job!

1. I'm looking at the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Soft, Layla (soft side), or other since they rate around 4 in firmness. I need something between 2-4 firmness, correct?

What mattress are you currently sleeping on and how old is it? You a comparing two opposite feeling mattress models, Grayson, so we'll need to get a better idea of what your sleep history is like. BB's Signature Soft is a memory foam hybrid, whereas the Layla is an all-memory foam mattress with two-sided firmness options. Either of these models "could" be a good choice, both have listed spec information that meets TMU's durability criteria.

2. I was looking at $1000 budget for King size. How much of a difference is there between a $1000 king vs. $2000 and $3000 king? What do I get for spending more?

This is an interesting question and the answer is quite broad in scope, Grayson. Generally speaking, the differences include the quality of the materials, the quality of the workmanship, and the support of the brand. Higher quality/ more durable materials come with a higher cost to use but last longer and feel better longer. More intricate construction methods for proprietary designs add to higher price tags. Brand marketing costs also add to the pricing equation. You will find that all of our trusted members offer high quality, high performance, and highly durable mattresses in a king size at competitive prices. Hope this helps with your question and looking forward to your reply ;) .

Thanks for replying! We are sleeping on a queen memory foam bed that we bought in 2011 for $350 from foammattressdiscounts.com, The description was "Queen Size 5lb Density 8 Inch Memory Foam Mattress".

As for the price question, I asked because I was trying to understand what moving up from the Brooklyn Signature Soft to the Brooklyn Aurora Soft, Brooklyn Spartan Soft, or Brooklyn Sedona or Layla Hybrid soft would get me, or even other more expensive brands such as Amerisleep AS3/AS4/AS5, Casper Nova Hybrid, Ghostbed Luxe, Helix Sunset, Molecule 2, Muse, Nest Bedding Alexander, PlushBeds Botanical Bliss, Puffy Lux, Saatva Classic, Tuft & Needle Hybrid, Winkbed/Winkbed GravityLux/Winkbed EcoCloud.

I am going to Sleepare in Tysons Corner, VA tomorrow to try a bunch of beds.

So my wife and I went to Sleepare and we like either the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Medium or Winkbed Luxury Firm. Any thoughts?

We noticed the Winkbed has a lot of motion transfer, so now I'm down to Brooklyn Bedding Signature Medium and Tuft & Needle Mint

Thinking about it some more, maybe the Winkbed in king size won't have as much motion transfer. Anyone have thoughts between the Winkbed, Brooklyn Bedding Signature, and Tuft & Needle Mint?

Hey Grayson73,

@Sensei What do you think between the Winkbed, Brooklyn Bedding Signature, and Tuft & Needle Mint?

Let's take a look "under the hood", so to speak, of your 3 picks from a durability standpoint, shall we?

Winkbed Luxury Firm:
• Proprietary gel-infused foam comfort material, Winkbeds' chat confirms it is an HD polyfoam, 111-12 ILD/ 1.5-2 lbs density
• Multi-zoned pocket coil support core
• Rated 6.5/ 10 firmness scale

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Medium:
• Medium -Base to Top
• 1.5 Inch Base Support Foam 6 Inch Ascension Coil with perimeter coils
• 1.5 Inch 3.5LB 28ILD Energex
• 1.5 Inch 3.5LB 18ILD TitanFlex
• 1 Inch Quilt Foam w/Jones FR
• Signature Brooklyn Bedding Stretch Knit Cotton Fabric Tack & Jump Quilted Top
• Rated 6/ 10 firmness scale

Tuft & Needle Mint:
• 100% Polyurethane Foam
• 3" Adaptive Foam with graphite (no gel) — 3.5lbs/cubic foot
• 2" Adaptive Foam with Ceramic gel — 3.0lbs/cubic foot
• 7" polyurethane foam — 1.8lbs/cubic foot
• Rated Medium-Firm

I was impressed by the speed and transparency of the chat responses by all three sites and encourage folks to take advantage of that service when available. More questions for you: did you both enjoy your current 10 year old queen Size 5lb Density 8 Inch memory foam mattress? Are you fans of memory foam's unique feel and qualities? What brand is it? You are comparing 2 foam hybrids and an all-polyfoam model to your memory foam mattress. What qualities of your current mattress do you like and would want to enjoy with your next mattress? What are some that you want to avoid? You did mention motion transfer was a deal breaker of sorts. One of memory foam's magical qualities is its motion separation ability which is prized by sleepers who move little and enjoy being cradled and the "sleeping in" feel that memory foam provides. You may find that a pocket coil support core to react more responsively, as the coils will interact individually when moving across the mattress's surface. Use of a king size will minimize transfer of that feel to a degree. Looking forward to your updates as you narrow down choices further.

Thanks,
Sensei

We thought our memory foam was ok, but it was hard when cold. No clue what the brand was. We liked the WinkBed in the store so I decided to buy that one. I hope that since it's a King sized bed, that the motion transfer won't be too bad.
