I just purchased the Luma Sleep Mattress (just the mattress) which features a 1.5 inch 28ILD Talalay Layer over Pocketed Coils. Luma has a hybrid sleep system which features a 3 in Talalay Topper on top of the mattress, but it is just out of my price range. I noticed that Dunlop Toppers tend to be more affordable, and so I was wondering if there was anything inherently "wrong" or "weird" about putting a 2" Dunlop Topper on the base Luma mattress?

Thanks!

Hi bryfkim,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum! :)

I noticed that Dunlop Toppers tend to be more affordable, and so I was wondering if there was anything inherently "wrong" or "weird" about putting a 2" Dunlop Topper on the base Luma mattress?

There’s absolutely nothing “wrong” or “weird” with what you’re considering - you’re in the clear! People place different types of toppers over latex all of the time – Dunlop, Talalay, wool, microcoils…even memory foam. Each material has its own unique feel. Dunlop generally will feel a bit firmer than Talalay at a similarly rated ILD (it has a higher compression modulus and “firms up faster”). This post has a brief explanation of some of the differences between Dunlop and Talalay latex.

There is more information about choosing a topper in post #2 here and the topper guidelines it links to which along with a conversation with a reliable and knowledgeable supplier (that can provide you with good information about how their toppers compare to each other or to other toppers they are familiar with that are available on the market) can help you use your sleeping experience as a reference point and guideline to help you choose the type, thickness, and firmness for a topper that has the least possible risk and the best chance for success. When looking at toppers, be sure to find something with a cover - some topers are offered only as a piece of foam and you'll want to protect it from UV, abrasion and oxidation.
