I just purchased a Feildcrest Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper. It's 100% Polyester, and all materials were made in the U.S. (Only the polyester zip-off cover was made in China.) I brought it home and put it right on my bed. I didn't use the zip-off cover because I wanted to wash it first.
I loved its wonderful support, and great comfortable feeling. I was a little aware of its "funky" smell, and decided I would air it out next day.
The next morning, I woke up feeling a little off-kelter. And after getting up and walking around, I realized that my balance was off a bit.
I sat around most of the morning. Felt better by noon. Meanwhile, I took the gel foam topper off the bed, took it outside to be aired out, and opened a window in the bedroom, and turned on the overhead fan.
About 4:00 P.M. that afternoon, I was working with both the computer and the adding machine--going back and forth between the two, when suddenly, my eyes felt a bit crossed, and I was suddenly very nauseated. For the next 48 hours, I was in the bathroom, violent projectile vomiting, and all the other not so nice things gothat accompany being very sick. I also had double vision, a bit of room spiinning, and total weakness. For the next three days, I've been quite weak, and slowly recovering.
I'm terrifed to bring the topper back into the house. I don't know if it was just coincidence, or if it was the topper. I went on line and read some pretty scarry things about polyurathane, and the chemicals present in gel foam mattrresses.
Can you give advise? Thanks J.S.

Hi J.S.,

There's no way for me to know any more than you of course based on a single days experience and with those types of symptoms I would check with your doctor as a first step. As far as the topper I would at least make sure that the memory foam was CertiPur certified. It's possible that the topper is made in the US with materials that come from China.

There are also some people who are very sensitive to memory foam or some batches of memory foam even when it's CertiPur certified but the symptoms disappear when the memory foam is removed. The only way to know for certain is if the situation repeats if you use the topper again.

This is one of those cases that only your own "best judgement" and a doctors visit can decide what to do.
