While this is my first post, it is far from my first visit.

Let me start by saying my wife and I are years beyond needing a new mattress. I tend to be the type to research myself out a new purchase out of fear of disappointment (just purchased my first flat screen tv in march). With that said, I have been researching mattresses for 2 years on and off. Now I believe, with the help from this forum, we have selected a latex mattress with Brooklyn Bedding being the front runner.

The only question I have is: Are there any negatives/cons to buying latex?

I understand that the feel and comfort of a mattress varies from person to person. What I'm wondering is related to materials. Such as, memory foam tends to sleep hot so that's not an option for me and innersprings can/will sag...

Thanks for any and all help

Hi Getmorsleep,

You've probably already read this but just in case ... post #1 here is always the first place to tart your research and has the basic information, steps, and guidelines you will need to make good choices.

The only question I have is: Are there any negatives/cons to buying latex?

You can read more about the pros and cons of latex in this article . The main "cons" are that you may not like its feel or resilience and that it tends to be more costly than other types of foam. Different types of latex mattress designs will also have a wide range of different "feels" and performance in terms of PPP (Pressure relief, Posture and alignment, and Personal preferences) so you may also like one design while another may not be your preference or suitable for your body type or sleeping style.

innersprings can/will sag...

Actually this isn't usually the case with most innerspring mattresses. Most "traditional" innerspring mattresses use lower quality foams above the springs and the comfort layers of a mattress are usually (although not always) the "weak link" of a mattress. In most cases if you were to remove the foam from an innerspring mattress that has "failed" you would find that the springs are still in relatively good condition and that its the foam above them that is the reason the mattress has "failed" and lost it's comfort and/or support.

Thanks for your reply and clarification on innersprings.

With the help of the endless information and reviews found here I finally felt comfortable enough to pull the trigger. We ordered the Aloe Alexis from BB on Memorial Day after making a final run to our local store that sold latex mattresses.

They are a dealer for purebliss. Their comparable mattress, which we liked the best, carried an msrp of 3x the Aloe Alexis. With the holiday savings dropping that to only double the price  !

I can't wait to report our experience with the mattress, as the customer service (thanks Jacob) has been nothing short of great.

Thanks again Phoenix for your dedication in providing a service that no doubt kept me and many others from being eaten alive by the marketing monster that is the mattress business.

Hi Getmoresleep,

Thanks for the kind words!

You certainly made a good choice and not only does the Aloe Alexis have a latex transition layer which can improve the performance of the mattress compared to a single latex layer but it has more options for making adjustments after the purchase if it becomes necessary.

Most of all though ... congratulations on your new mattress ... you did well :)

I'd just like to echo my agreement on this topic!

Not knowing anything about mattresses but having heard about Saatva I thought I was beating the system in finding them. In looking for reviews from places other then them, I came across The Mattress Underground. I'm so glad I didn't buy from them unknowingly! I just finished reading through a number of your articles and now actually have knowledge on mattresses and will know if what I'm looking at is a quality, durable product or not. Thank you for your help!
