Hi. I bought an Ergomotion adjustable bed base, and they are offering an extended warranty. The free warranty is 1 year long. 1 extra year is $99 and 2 is $149. This is per base. I spent $1,250 on each base. I just don't know enough about adjustable bases to know if the extra year or 2 of protection is worth the money. Does anyone have any experience or insight that would help me make this decision?

Thank you!

Hi satooty,

This is one of those questions that you will get different answers from different people.

Adjustable beds that are made by a reliable manufacturer such as Ergomotion have relatively few issues so it will really depend on your risk tolerance. If you are one of the majority that don't need any repairs in the 2nd or 3rd year that costs more than the extended warranty then of course you would be glad if you didn't purchase it and if you are one of the much smaller minority that did need repairs in the 2nd or 3rd year that did cost more than the extended warranty then you would be glad if you did.

Unfortunately there is no way to predict which group you will be in but I happen to be one of those that wouldn't purchase an extended warranty for only an additional 1 or 2 years.

I also love poker (although I don't play for high stakes) :)

I'd have some questions for the retailer. Typically all bases will have a 20 ish year prorated warranty. 1 year parts and labor, years 2 and 3 parts, and then it prorates from there. Far as extended warranties, again most I've seen are a 10 year full warranty. $149 would be an average price per base, for a 10 year in my experience. Far as working on them, pending you aren't bending steel (which wouldn't be a warranty issue anyhow) they're pretty simple to work on if you can get the parts.

I wouldn't spend the that money for that short a period of time, but that is me and my opinion. Typically I like extended warranties but they have to make sense too.

Most adjustable bed bases are made quite well, and the motors are under load for very short periods of time. While I'm generally not a fan of extended warranties, you may wish to consider them if you live in an area where you have power surges or if you've had a bad experience in the past and want piece of mind.

An extended warranty for only a few years is a waste of your money. If you're going to get one, find a 10-year option, as they shouldn't cost much more than a 2-year (we offer our 10-year at $99.00, which I know is lower than you'll usually find). Make sure the extended warranty picks up where your manufactures' warranty leaves off, and that it covers parts and labor for that entire time period.

Regarding potential repairs, most power bases are pretty much "plug and play" if there is a defect. The massage motors are usually attached with 4-8 screws, and the lift motors usually use only 2-3 bolts. Then there's a cable that plugs into the "brain box." Pretty simple.

In the end, it comes down to your tolerance for risk. It's not as if these items are blowing up left and right. If you're using the item quite a bit (adjusting multiple times a day) and spending a lot of time in the bed, live in an area where you have surges, are heavier in weight or are mechanically uninclined, you may wish to consider a longer extended warranty. Otherwise, you'll more than likely be just fine without one.

I'd urge ANYONE considering an extended warranty on an adjustable bed to not buy it.

EVERY one I've ever seen allows the use of refurbished and non OEM parts.

I know that the beds I sell (Leggett & Platt) have almost zero problems from year 2 ~ 10.

Once the bed is in your home and all is working, any bad parts will show up the first year. It's not year 2 through 10 you need to be concerned about.

Extended Warranties are VERY cheap for a retailer to buy. About $25 to $35. Why so low? The Warranty Company knows the risk of them having to pay for anything is VERY low. They're "betting" you'll never need them. And they know the odds better than anyone here.

Hi Tim (Richmond Bedding),

As always your input and expertise are greatly appreciated. You and Jeff make a good point to consider when enticed by an extended warranty for a power base. I'll add these notes to our Adjustable beds thread and guidelines.

It would be great to touch base with you by the end of the month (I think I owe you some answers :) )

Until soon
