Hi Phoenix,

I'm about to order a memory foam mattress (switching from innerspring my whole life), and was wondering if you knew anything about this Loom & Leaf mattress? I glanced over their website and everything about the mattress appears to be high quality and great value relative to the big name brands. I just want to make sure I'm making the best possible choice, as I'm about to order one any day now.

Thanks!

Taylor

Hi Tgordon156,

The Loom & Leaf is a new mattress that was just launched by Saatva. Their claims about comparable mattresses are somewhat exaggerated.

Assessing the quality and durability of any mattress depends on knowing the specifics of the materials inside it because a mattress is only as good as the quality/density of the materials inside it (see this article ). When I asked them for specifics they told me that this information is proprietary which means that it would be a very risky purchase. I would avoid any mattress where a manufacturer or retailer is either unable or unwilling to provide you with the information you need to make an informed buying decision (see the guidelines here ).

You can see a copy of my chat with them just now where they told me they wouldn't provide this information to their customers..

What is the density of your convoluted gel foam in the top layer, the type of material and the density of the transition loft pad, and the density of the polyfoam support core?

The densities of the foams throughout our mattress vary between 1.5 & 1.8 units

Please know the exact figures are proprietary

I'm assuming that you mean 1.5 and 1.8 lbs (not units) but the gel memory foam would be higher than this (memory foam has a higher density range than polyfoam). Just to confirm though ... you don't provide the specific densities of the individual layers?

Marcos
That is correct

EDIT: Since this chat from a few days aqo they seem to have added to their description and now specify that the convoluted gel memory foam is 4 lb density ( see here ) but the convoluting would reduce the durability of this layer to a "functional equivalent" that was less than the minimum 4 lb density I would normally suggest. The 5 lb memory foam and the gel layer on top are both high quality materials but a mattress is only as good as it's weakest link and they are also still not providing the density of the 2" transition loft pad or the base polyfoam support layer.
